Dr. Rogers on the Importance of Dentistry at an Early Age

Early Childhood Dental Visits

There are two goals in bringing your children to our White Rock/South Surrey dental office. The first is to make sure that your child’s teeth are coming in correctly and do not have any problems. Believe it or not, your child’s baby teeth can get cavities. But it’s also important to set the stage for great dental health. This is done by making regular visits. That’s why we recommend bringing in your children when they are 2 years old.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

This depends a lot on your child. The most important point is to help your child feel comfortable and safe at the dentist’s office. This will make future visits go more smoothly. It can also lead to your child having better dental habits at home. That’s why we will give as much of a dental cleaning and exam as we can. Our staff knows how to work with children, and Dr. Rogers is great with kids.

You will also get some advice on proper dental hygiene and good eating habits. At the end of the appointment, your child will get to pick a prize from our “treasure chest.”

Easy Thumb Sucking Solutions

It’s completely normal for children to suck their thumbs. It’s basically the same thing as using a pacifier. Neither is a problem at first. Yes, sucking on thumbs can move your child’s teeth out of alignment. As long as this happens to the baby teeth, it’s not anything to worry about. Most kids will stop sucking on thumbs and pacifiers around the time their adult teeth start to come in. However, some children don’t stop. If this happens, speak with Dr. Rogers so we can make some recommendations. Continued thumb sucking after the adult teeth come in can push teeth out of alignment.

Ease Your Child’s Teething

Teething is a mild to moderate discomfort that happens when the primary teeth start to break through the gums. It’s normal for young children to experience this. It can make them a bit cranky and want to chew on things. (The pressure from chewing helps relieve some of the pain.) There are a few things you can do to help. A cold teething ring can work wonders, but make sure it’s not frozen. You can also gently rub your child’s gums with a clean, wet washcloth. If you have any questions about helping your child through this stage, we are happy to make recommendations when you bring your child in for his or her appointment.
