Did you know that here at the White Rock Dental Group, we can replace lost teeth or missing teeth with a modern set of dentures? We sure can! But ideally we will be able to help you hang onto your natural smile! That’s why, today, we want to look at some of the more common reasons behind tooth loss. So, read on, and then be sure to follow up and schedule your next appointment with Dr. Rogers and the rest of our South Surrey/White Rock, BC dental team.

Bad Hygiene

You should be brushing twice a day, as well as flossing and rinsing with a fluoride-based mouthwash as often as possible. Not doing your part at home can lead to a buildup of plaque. This is what causes tooth decay and gum disease, the sort of things that can lead to complete loss of your teeth.

Cavities

This probably won’t come as a surprise: tooth decay is a leading cause of tooth loss. So, you need to be proactive about coming in for a filling or other type of restorative solution.

Periodontal Disease

Just like cavities, gum disease is caused by oral bacteria. When that bacteria gets below your gumline it starts to cause inflammation, infection, and eventual weakening of your gums. They’ll start to recede, showing more and more of the roots of your teeth until they start to lose stability. Most gum disease patients lose multiple teeth in a hurry as the infection spreads from tooth to tooth!

Emergency Situations

An automobile collision, sports injury, or just a slip-and-fall injury can happen without much notice. We have seen how teeth are lost from that kind of trauma every day.

In some instances traumatically damaged tooth can be saved with a crown or other restoration, but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes there’s simply nothing that we can do. Still, we will do our best set you up with a great replacement plan if that is the hand you have been dealt. Modern dentures are a better than ever.

Dental Anxiety

Being afraid of your dentist won’t be good for you. Obviously, there are a lot of places in your mouth that can’t be reached with brushing and flossing alone. That’s why professional cleanings are so important. Dental exams are able to detect cavities much earlier than you can spot them. The same goes for gum disease.
